About Me

Hey, I’m Simon.
#

Born in 1977, father of two boys who regularly join me in the forest. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been drawn outdoors — into the woods. With a backpack, a tarp and a fire steel. A night under the trees gives me more than any holiday.

It started with the scouts — at 11 years old I slept outdoors properly for the first time, made fire, experienced nature up close. That shaped me. Later came military service, where I learned to get by with little and function in the field.

Beyond bushcraft, I’m a geek at heart: Bitcoiner, 3D printing enthusiast, tech nerd. And when I’m not in the forest, you’ll find me in my home gym. But being outside is what I love most.

The Channel
#

Mit Kappe im Wald (literally: “with cap in the forest”) started in 2020 — born from the simple idea of documenting the trips I was already taking. No studio, no script, no show. Just head out, set up camp, cook over a fire and let the camera roll.

What you see on the channel is exactly what happens: solo overnighters in sub-zero temperatures, stealth camping with tarps and camouflage nets, meetups with like-minded people, campfire cooking from simple to ambitious. Not a bushcraft survival expert — just a guy who loves being outside. Sometimes the boys come along — it gets louder, but no less fun.

Gear
#

I test my gear where it belongs — in the forest. Not in an apartment in front of a camera. What I show is what I actually use. My videos are deliberately without narration — the visually and the atmosphere tell the story. If you’re looking for gear details, you’ll find them here on the blog.

You can find my current gear collection on the gear page.

The Blog
#

This blog complements the YouTube channel. My videos are intentionally without commentary — this is the place for everything the images don’t show: detailed trip reports, in-depth gear reviews and background stories. For reading up, browsing and planning your own adventures.

See You Out There

If you have questions, feel free to reach out. And if you run into me somewhere in the forest — say hello. I’m the one wearing the cap.

Greetings from Germany 🌲✌🏼🌳
