If I had to pick one piece of kit that covers both water carrying and cooking, this would be it. The Nordic Wolf canteen set has been a staple in my pack for well over a year now, and it keeps earning its spot on every trip I take.
Build & Material#
The set comes as three parts: a 1.2 litre canteen, a 0.8 litre cup that nests over the bottle, and an olive cotton pouch with MOLLE webbing. Everything is made from 304 stainless steel, which means no coatings to worry about and nothing that degrades over time. The cup fits snugly over the canteen, keeping things quiet in the pack. Build quality is solid — clean welds, no sharp edges, nothing to complain about. At 670 grams total it is not the lightest option out there, but that is the trade-off you make for a material you can throw straight into a fire without a second thought.
In the Field#
I mainly use the canteen to carry water and the cup for everything that involves heat. Boiling water for coffee, heating up a quick soup, warming some food by the fire — it all works without any fuss. Being able to cook directly over open flame or in the embers is the biggest advantage this set has over plastic bottles or coated aluminium alternatives. After a few uses over fire the cup develops some discolouration on the outside, which is purely cosmetic. On the downside, the bottle cap can get quite stiff after being exposed to heat, and you sometimes need a firm grip to open it. The cotton pouch is sturdy but takes its time drying after rain — a synthetic bag would be more practical in wet conditions. As a cooking vessel the 0.8 litre cup is perfectly fine for one person but gets tight if you are trying to cook for two.
Verdict#
The Nordic Wolf canteen set is a straightforward, hard-wearing bit of kit for anyone who likes campfire cooking and wants water transport and a cooking vessel in one compact package. If ultralight is your priority, look at titanium. But if you value durability and simplicity at a fair price, this set delivers.
