Nordic Wolf Wool Mat FREYA

The FREYA from Nordic Wolf is a bushcraft sleeping mat made from cotton canvas with a wool filling. I use it as a ground layer during the warmer months when I don’t want an inflatable sleep system.

Material and Build

The outer shell is canvas, the filling is sheep’s wool. The underside has a water-resistant finish which makes a difference when the ground is damp. There is a built-in pocket for a pillow insert. Pair it with the wool blanket from Nordic Wolf and you have a complete natural sleep system.

In the Field

For the warm season the FREYA is my first choice at the bushcraft camp when I want to sleep close to the ground and keep natural materials throughout the kit. It is heavier and bulkier than an inflatable mat, but at a fixed camp without a long carry that doesn’t matter much. An inflatable mat is lighter and warmer for winter, but it doesn’t feel like bushcraft gear. If you sleep on the ground and want natural materials throughout, the FREYA fits.
